Daniel - I've been working on pencil control. Right now, it's random light/dark in the lines. There's a note in one book I have that people have a tendency to overemphasize intersections - I've noticed that I overemphasize outer contour lines, when they're actually very light sometimes. (Note some foreheads).
I have a challenge for you: make some tone squares, from light to dark, with variable crosshatching. (The standard is to make 12).
Then make the same tone squares with the same # of lines, but only varying hardness of push. No going back over the lines.
Then: draw your hair, with very bright and very dark areas, but with single continuous lines - getting the light areas with light pressure.
I'll do it too.
